Home solar systems are useless when the Grid goes down unless you have invested tens of thousands into a wall of power battery backup system. There is no easy way or inexpensive way to change that. However, for a relatively small investment as compared, we can purchase enough portable and off Grid equipment to get us through most outages. The problem is that it is not as easy as it could be if there were just a little more preparation done in advance. The portable power company that seizes the opportunity will benefit greatly. First. People need to understand that portable battery power unit are never going to replace the Whole House systems that cost upwards of $40,000. The people need to understand that the goal is to keep the necessary items, like refrigerator, portable heating and cooling units and cooking units available. NOT full house AC units and such. To do that means dragging around extension cords, pulling freezer and other appliances out of their cubby holes and such. It is not easy to do that with every item you want to power up. The smart portable power company will provide a complete package for the individual to get prepared for the outage before it happens. A kit that includes a solar powered generator, solar panels to recharge the unit, and a disconnect switch to isolate the most important circuits from the main power panel of the house. All of this is can be a simple task if done right, and proper instructions are given. The user needs to understand that he is not trying to replace the grid in total, just trying to keep afloat until the grid returns. He must understand that his little portable battery pack will only do so much toward that end, so he can only break out a limited number of circuits with the supplied disconnect switch. One that is done, it can be plugged into any power source that is available and large enough to power the chosen circuits. Nobody is doing that at this point… NOBODY. They all just provide a Solar Generator and leave it to the consumer to figure out how to use it. Using a transfer switch is not only inexpensive, but by far the best way to use portable power. BUILD A KIT TO DO JUST THAT, and you will sell a lot of them.

Another key point is dealing with lack of sunshine. I have bought ample battery storage to power my two refrigerators and upright freezer, as well as the ancillary low power computer stuff and cell modem.
I just purchased a small inverter generator to charge the Bluetti batteries just in case of the no sunshine scenario, otherwise my several solar panels should be adequate to keep the cold stuff cold.
