First Bluetti purchase (AC180) starts with disappointment

I just unboxed my brand new AC180, connected the app and applied BMS update that was available then plugged it into AC power for its first charge. Hovers around 280w charging regardless of charge setting at a 61% SOC. Occasionally every 5 minutes or so it will ramp up charging (over a period of 5 seconds) to 1.1kw charging and immediately slide back down to 280w.

I bought this for its fast AC charging and 280w is NOT what was advertised. :frowning:

Anyone else having this issue or have a solution? Like I said this is my first charge so I’m not sure what the BMS charge curve is supposed to be but it sure looks like there is something wrong since it attempts to charge at a higher rate but falls back to 280w. TIA!

ETA: I forgot to post the version info for my AC180
ARM v2073.04
DSP v2077.06
BMS v1033.08

Hi @Stealther

welcome to the Bluetti Family!

Its recommended to do two full charging cycles to calibrate the BMS, when the unit is new.

So just leave it charging until its done, drain it with a constant load and recharge it via AC again. After this, your mentioned problem should be gone.

greetings
Erik

It may be interesting to use a wattmeter to check the voltage on the outlet you are using to charge the AC180. This could be useful to check for voltage drops due to incorrect wiring.
Or, just to do a quick test, I’ll try charging it from a different outlet.

@Stealther If it is still not solved after troubleshooting by the above members, pls let me know.

Couple things to check:
1-Is the unit almost completely charged already?
2-Have you selected the highest charging rate in the app?
3-Is the 180 physically too hot or too cold? Just completed a high wattage draw discharge that has heated the unit up or has it been exposed to the cold recently?

The AC180 does indeed provide very fast charging so there is something else at play here.

I appreciate the suggestion! Nothing out of the ordinary with the outlet(s) used. I tried it on different circuits and one with no other devices using it.

Scott,

  1. I received the unit at a 61% SOC and charged it from there
  2. I selected Silent, Standard, and Turbo and the only difference this made was that the consistent charge rate for Silent mode was around 260w whereas with both Standard and Turbo it was around 280w.
  3. Room temperature was about 68F/20C and the unit felt about the same temperature and did not appreciably change during the charge.

I speculate that it might be the BMS balancing the cells or something to that effect so I will see what the behavior is like after a few charge cycles and report back.

Thanks for the Welcome Erik! I’m in the process of doing a discharge with a few of my predicted use cases and will report back after a few charge cycles.

The good news is I don’t think there is any thing to worry about.
I have several AC180’s and at least 2 of them behaved this way with the initial charging cycle.
I changed the initial charge to standard, not sure what the factory default is, maybe this already.
Plug it in and leave it on and it might take sometime but it will get to 100%, mine got to 99% and stayed there for a long period but then did get to 100%.
Just be patient and let it sort it self out.
Then cycle fully and then you should have no further issues.
2 other AC 180’s I have did not behave like this, not sure why but since this all have functioned correctly.
I use the silent charge mode for the quiet operation then on.
Hope this helps.
