I have a Generac 6500 gas powered generator that I would like to use for charging my 2 sets of AC300/B300K systems. The Generac does produce the Pure Sine Wave that is recommended, but is 20 amps to much current? Do I need to contact Bluetti to ask for the code to increase my power input level from 15 amps? Thank you for any advice that will help prevent damaging the systems.
In general terms - that a generator will produce up to 20 amps is its max output. The device it powers may only draw 10 amps and that is all it will consume particularly if the genny has a demand (sometimes called eco) throttle.
As an example, I have a 2kVA Honda, if I turn eco off it produces a constant 1,600W and I plug my RV charger in which draws 500W. There is no damage to the RV charger as it limits its input to that 500W. All that happens is the engine of the genny is working harder for no gain. I therefore use eco mode so the engine slows down to produce only the power needed.
The other way to look at this is reference to the grid. Here in AU a home single phase outlet is rated to 240VAC @ 10 amps = 2,400W. (That is its max rating.) My AC180 at silent mode charging only uses 280W and that is all that is used.
Thank you so much for responding Mandp, I just wanted to make sure the 20 amp input current would not damage the AC 500. I will give it a try. Thank you again. Greg
@knightstale04 Try to look at this from the opposite perspective. The 20amps is not input current, it is the available output current of your genny. You will find, to my knowledge, all Bluetti power stations limit their charge input in amps, both AC & DC.
The value to be careful to not exceed, is voltage, particularly DC input. Another example I have is;
I have an AC180, in Standard AC charge mode it draws around 480W, in Silent mode only 280W. I have a 375W Victron inverter installed in my 4x4. The 180, is set to silent and uses 280W of the available 375W. If I set it to Standard mode the 180 will want 480W, overload the Victron and it will trip. No damage to either the Victron or 180.
